Promoting First Relationships® (PFR)

The Promoting First Relationships® (PFR) program, developed at the University of Washington School of Nursing, helps parents build a stronger bond with their young child—even when emotional or developmental challenges arise.

Research shows it supports your child’s development, reduces parental stress, and fosters safer, more caring relationships.

For parents of children aged 0–6 years

If your child :

  • Has a developmental delay
  • Has difficulty expressing their emotions
  • Has experienced situations of stress or instability

If you are :

  • Identifying and understanding your own emotional needs as a parent.
  • Recognizing and responding to your child’s needs.
  • Letting go and distancing yourself from certain tensions.

Benefits

  • Better understand your child’s emotions and know when they need a hug, comfort, or simply to be close to you.
  • Feel more confident and calmer as a parent, even during challenging moments.
  • Learn to manage your own emotions so you can better support your child.
  • Strengthen your bond so your child feels safe, secure, and naturally turns to you for comfort.
  • Gain practical tools to handle stress and navigate difficult situations with greater ease.
